What Is CMD Prompt Defrag?

CMD Prompt Defrag refers to the process of running disk defragmentation from the Windows Command Prompt. Note that the steps described apply to the Windows Vista and 7 operating systems.

Command Prompt

• The Command Prompt is an interface that allows you to issue commands to the operating system. Among other things, you can use the Command Prompt to delete files, change system configurations and search directories.

Disk Defragmentation

• Disk defragmentation is the consolidation of fragmented files on the hard drive. This is done to help the computer run more efficiently.

Run CMD Disk Defrag

• Click "Start," type "cmd" into the "Search" box and press "Enter" to open the Command Prompt. Type "defrag.exe c:" and press "Enter." Note that "c:" should be replaced with the drive that you want to defrag.
