What Is the Difference Between Optometrists & Opticians?

Opticians and optometrists are health care professionals whose coordinated efforts help people see better. The optometrist examines the patient and diagnoses the problem, while the optician creates the patient's glasses and makes sure they fit.
  • Optometrist

    • Also known as doctors of optometry or ODs, optometrists diagnose vision problems, examine patients' ability to focus and coordinate their eyes and test for color and depth perception problems. They correct these problems with prescription lenses or therapy. Optometrists also test patients for eye diseases and eye problems caused by other illnesses and sometimes refer patients to other health care professionals.

    Considerations

    • Like other health care professionals, optometrists can be general practitioners or specialize in a particular area. Optometry specializations include pediatrics, geriatrics, contact lenses and vision therapy. Optometrists shouldn't be confused with ophthalmologists, who are medical doctors and can perform eye surgery.

    Optician

    • An optician is like a pharmacist for glasses, creating prescription lenses as instructed by an optometrist or ophthalmologist. The optician also helps patients choose eyeglass frames, adjusts the frames for proper fit, helps fit contact lenses and instructs patients in proper care and use of eyewear. Opticians receive their training in school or through apprenticeship.
