What Is Electrical Code?

An electrical code is a set of rules and regulations that set forth the standards for electrical installations. The codes and regulations can vary between states. Cities and counties can adopt their own electrical code requirements.

Canadian Electrical Code C.E.C.

• The C.E.C. provides the rules and regulations concerning electrical installations in Canada. It is the uniform electrical code applicable in every Canadian province.

National Electrical Code N.E.C.

• The N.E.C. is the electrical code used throughout the United States. Most jurisdictions have adopted some version of the N.E.C. The N.E.C is published by the National Fire Prevention Association.

Permits

• A permit is usually required before any electrical installation or modification work can begin. Some jurisdictions allow homeowners to perform electrical work on their own homes without a permit.

Code Inspection

• An inspection is usually required upon completion of any electrical installation. The inspector is responsible for making sure that any electrical work performed is in compliance with the local code.
