What Is Flexographic Ink?

Flexography is the process used when printing packaging materials including paper and plastic bags, newspapers and containers. This process has grown in popularity due to its simplicity and environmental friendliness.
  • History

    • Flexography was originally known as aniline printing. The ink used with this kind of printing was extremely toxic, therefore not compatible with printing on food packaging, and was subsequently banned. With much trial and error, a new type of ink and printing system was developed.

In the 1980's, the Clean Air Act pushed printing companies to use water-based inks. Today, most printing presses are easily suited to water-based inks and allow ink to be recycled.

    Types

    • The three most commonly used types of flexographic ink are solvent based, UV-curable and water based. The type of printing surface determines the ink used. Each type of ink has its own set of advantages and disadvantages.

    Function

    • Flexography ink is important in the packaging process for manufacturers. Ink manufacturers must continually adapt to changes in packaging materials to keep up with printing process advances.

To achieve success, ink manufacturers and printers must work together to meet changing demands.
