What Is Included With a Retail Box Processor?

Unlike original equipment manufacturer processors, retail box processors typically include more than just the processor. Because retail box packages aren't produced in the same quantities that OEM components are, they tend to be slightly more expensive.
  • Retail Box Contents

    • Retail box processors usually include a heatsink/fan combo to cool the processor and a thermal solution for applying between the processor and the heatsink (this thermal solution may be fused to the heatsink already, not requiring user application).

In addition, retail box processors include a warranty from the processor manufacturer (either Intel or AMD), instructions on how to install the processor in a motherboard, and an certificate of authenticity. Sometimes, logo labels for computer case decoration are included as well.

    OEM Contents

    • OEM processors will most likely come with only the processor included. This means no manual will be available, no warranty information will be included (though one may still be available through the manufacturer), and no cooling option will be bundled. These need to be supplied by the computer builder.

    Considerations

    • OEM processors are often sought by the system builder who needs supreme cooling, because the OEMs supply better cooling options than ones pre-packaged with retail box processors will be needed. Only purchase an OEM processor if you're certain you won't need the thermal solution, manuals or additional warranties that may be offered.
