When software is installed on your Microsoft Windows computer, files are added and various system changes are made. The Microsoft Installer, or Windows MSI, engine controls these software installations so that software can be cleanly removed.
Installation

The Microsoft Windows Installer is supplied with the Windows operating system. New versions of the Microsoft Installer (MSI) are made available via the Microsoft website and can also be downloaded via Windows Update.
Versions

Windows MSI 3.0 has now been superseded by MSI 3.1. Windows Vista is supplied with MSI 4 and Windows 7 is supplied with MSI 5.
