What Was the First Gerber Multi-Tool?

Originally a knife manufacturer, Gerber expanded into making multi-tools with great success. Today the company, based in Portland, Oregon, has an expansive range of multi-tools that are versatile enough to be used in many situations.
  • History

    • The first Gerber multi-tool was launched in 1991. It was known as the 'multi-plier' and became the foundation of the Gerber multi-tool series. The 'multi-plier' had an array of fold out tools such as a wire cutter and of course, traditional plier jaws. This multi-tool was designed to be used for everything from household repairs to building furniture.

    Types

    • There is an array of different multi-tool types that Gerber now manufactures. From multi-tools that include interchangeable screwdriver heads, to basic multi-plier models that are based around the original 1991 model.

    Cost

    • Gerber multi-tools vary greatly in price. Depending on what you need, the Gerber multi-tools range from basic models for under $20 retail as of 2010, to high-end models that retail at more than $50.
