Windows Live Messenger, once known as MSN Messenger, is the most recent instant messaging client from hardware and software manufacturer Microsoft. The 8.0 Beta version of the program was the first to carry the name Windows Live Messenger in late 2005. Messenger users can read about and download the software from Microsoft's Windows Live website.
Installation

As of November 2010, users can download Windows Live Messenger 2011 from the Microsoft website. Installation requires the user to install a download manager from Microsoft. The user can then choose to download Microsoft products such as Windows Live Messenger, Internet Explorer or Windows Live Mail.
Mobile

Mobile phone users can download mobile application versions of Windows Live/MSN Messenger for their compatible mobile phones. Users can search for free or commercially available instant messaging applications in their respective application stores or websites. Generally, third-party developers create these applications, not Microsoft itself.
