Considerations
-
Peas grow in different types of soils, including sandy to clay soils. No matter what type of soil peas are planted in, it needs to be well-draining soil. Peas do not grow and produce well in soil that stays wet for long periods.
Significance
-
Peas prefer a pH level of 6 to 7.5, which is slightly acidic. Always test the pH level of the soil before adjusting it.
Preparation
-
Pea plants prefer soil with high amounts of organic matter. Spread a 1-to-2-inch layer of compost, aged manure, peat moss or leaf mold over the soil before planting. Mix this into the top 6 to 8 inches of soil. This provides the pea plants with plenty of nutrients.
