Window Treatments for Sun Control

    • During warm weather months, air conditioners and fans can be pretty effective at keeping a home or business cool. Windows allow heat from the sun to pass through, which counteracts the efforts of air conditioners or fans as the sun's heat elevates room temperature. Using window treatments that effectively block the sun can aid in reducing the temperature in your home or business, thus reducing energy costs. A variety of window treatments are available that will effectively keep the sun's rays at bay.

    Window Awnings

Window awnings are attached to the exterior of a home over the windows. Awnings cover the top portion of windows, effectively preventing the sun's rays from entering through the window. The awnings are available in various lengths to offer varying amounts of coverage, with shorter awnings providing less shade. Window awnings are available at most home supply stores, and some awning shops also create custom awnings.

    Blackout Curtains

    • Blackout curtains have a backing that is made from a very tightly woven fabric, usually multiple layered, which blocks most of the light; with some brands claiming up to 99.9 percent light reduction. They are available in solid colors and prints. Most blackout curtains have the same look and feel as regular curtains. Generally, the only difference is the blackout curtains have a lining. Blackout curtains can be purchased from most places that sell window curtains. They are more expensive than regular window curtains.
