Windshield Glass Types

The type of windshield glass known as aftermarket glass is inexpensive but less sturdy than windshields that come straight from the manufacturer. Aftermarket glass is produced by companies that do not carry contracts with specific car manufacturers. In addition to becoming cracked or shattered more easily, this type of glass is harder to repair. Although this type of glass complies with federal motor vehicle safety standards, it doesn't come with the typical guarantees buyers will find with other windshields.

An OEM glass windshield is manufactured to the same standards and requirements as factory produced windshields. Although this type of glass rates highly in safety, it is also more expensive than other types. Most insurance companies will cover the costs to replace or install a new windshield in a vehicle with usually a small deductible, however. The OEM glass type also has a much higher visibility rate, than that of the aftermarket glass type.
