Working Conditions for Chemical Engineers

After research chemists develop new compounds and formulas in laboratories, chemical engineers devise ways to mass-produce them or use them in a range of products. Their work environment varies depending on the company for which they work.

Physical Environments

• Laboratories are the most common places chemical engineers work. Some work in offices when they are collaborating with other engineers or companies. If they are directly involved in developing processes or equipment, chemical engineers supervise manufacturing or production operations. Applying safe chemical and hazardous materials handling practices is necessary in the latter environments.

Intellectual Atmosphere

• Exchanging ideas and data with peers and associates to develop products and processes is typically part of a chemical engineer's workday. Many chemical engineers are analytical thinkers with proclivities for math and science. Being able to think independently while maintaining objectivity is important.

Work Hours

• A 40-hour workweek is typical for a chemical engineer. Some special projects may require occasional overtime or weekend work.
