Lipodissolve Results

Lipodissolve is an incision-free fat-removal procedure. Synthetic bile and phosphatidylcholine are injected under the skin into the fat. Proponents say these two substances then work to break down the fat, which the liver and kidneys then remove naturally. The result is a slimmer, leaner appearance.
  • Benefits

    • The benefits of Lipodissolve as compared to liposuction or other fat-removal surgery are that Lipodissolve is much less invasive and therefore much easier on the patient, and recovery is shorter. No anesthesia is typically required.

    Drawbacks

    • As of October 2010, Lipodissolve is not FDA-approved, and its benefits and safety have not been firmly established.

It can be less precise and less effective than liposuction. Also, in order to keep from flooding the body's kidneys and liver with fat, only one small area can be treated at a time. Therefore several Lipodissolve treatments are often needed.

    Overall Results

    • While Lipodissolve was still awaiting FDA approval and conclusive clinical trials as of late 2010, a study by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery suggested that Lipodissolve may have a role in removing small pockets of fat. Many patients reported that they are satisfied with the slimmer, leaner appearance of the treated areas.

  • Natural Ways to Decrease Appetite

    • Increased appetite works against your diet plan. Buena Vista Images/Stockbyte/Getty Images

Increased appetite levels make maintaining or losing weight very difficult. While everyone knows that you must control your diet to regulate your weight, a rampant appetite only makes this harder. Methods to decrease your appetite will make your diet much easier to manage. According to David Kessler, author of "The End of Overeating," even without active dieting, decreasing your appetite will help you lose weight and become healthier.

    Eat Slowly

    • Eat your food slowly so your body has time to communicate to your brain that you are full. When you eat food quickly, your brain does not realize you are full for 5 to 10 minutes following consumption, writes Kessler. It is far too common to reach for another bite before you have even finished swallowing your current bite. By chewing each bite 10 to 15 times and pausing between bites, you will naturally eat slower and realize when you are full.

    Drink More Water

    • Drink more water throughout the day. By drinking water, you keep your stomach full and decrease hunger pangs. According to Michael T. Murray and Michael R. Lyon, authors of "Hunger Free Forever," often when you feel hungry, your body is actually thirsty. Drink a glass of water first thing in the morning to give your body a boost of hydration and help your stomach feel full. Following that, you should drink a glass of water before, during and after each meal. The water before and during the meal will help you reduce how much you eat. The water after the meal will help you feel full longer. When you feel hungry between meal times, drink a glass of water and the craving should dissipate.

    Eat More Fiber

    • Eat a diet that is high in fiber. Fiber takes longer for your body to digest, keeping you full longer. One of the best times to eat fiber is at breakfast, as it keeps you feeling full throughout the day. Have a bowl of oatmeal or whole-grain cereal in the morning. Regular fiber intake will help suppress appetite and reduce the amount of food you consume. Foods high in fiber include pears, apples, oranges, bran cereal, oatmeal, whole wheat bread, potatoes and peas.

  • How to Calculate Fat Content Based on Moisture

You can easily calculate fat content if you are provided with the total moisture. The moisture in a food is any liquid that evaporates through drying or dehydration. Dry matter is the material that would be left if you took out all moisture from a food. Nutritionally, dry matter consists of carbohydrates, proteins and fats. You can determine the total dry matter with only the total moisture and easily understand how much fats and lipids are present in the food. This can be an effective way to estimate your fat intake if you are provided an accurate moisture content.
    • 1

Find the total dry matter in a food by subtracting the percent moisture from 100 percent.

Example: If a food is 75 percent moisture, it is 25 percent dry matter (100 percent minus 75 percent). It is assumed that moisture is a previously calculated or given value.

    • 2

Divide the given protein and carbohydrate percentage by the dry matter percentage (from step 1).

Example: If protein is 10 percent divide 10 percent by 25 percent to equal 40 percent protein.

If carbohydrate is 8 percent divide 8 percent by 25 percent to equal 32 percent carbohydrate.

    • 3

Calculate fat content by subtracting protein and carbohydrate calculations (from step 2) by 100 percent to get your estimated total fat percent of a food.

Example: 100 percent minus 40 percent (protein) minus 32 percent (carbohydrate) to equal 28 percent fat

  • How to Monitor IV Fluid Therapy

Patients receive intravenous fluids, IV fluid therapy, as part of treatment for a variety of medical conditions, primarily in a hospital environment. IV fluid therapy provides for patients' fluid volume needs, and often addresses specific medical needs.

To monitor patients receiving IV fluid therapy, clinicians measure vital signs indicating hydration status and measure specific blood components related to medical needs. Clinicians must replace maintenance and lost fluids while avoiding over-hydration from excessive fluid administration.
    • 1

Determine fluids needed for adequate patient hydration by calculating the sum of the following: emergency needs for resuscitation; restoration of hydration; maintenance requirements; and ongoing losses.

Measure fluid losses, for example in urine and feces. Calculate fluid restoration, resuscitation and maintenance requirements, using formulas based on body weight available in references such as "The Merck Manuals." Subtract any fluids the patient ingests from IV fluid needs.

Measure IV fluid volume and type administered and compare with needs. As needs change, for example if vomiting begins, adjust fluids accordingly.

    • 2

Monitor vital signs and symptoms indicating fluid balance to avoid dehydration or over-hydration. Relevant physical examination results include body weight, gum moisture, skin turgor, heart rate, breathing rate, lung sounds as heard with a stethoscope and observation of tissue swelling around eyes or under the skin.

Heart rate may increase, and body weight, gum moisture and skin turgor, the resiliency of skin after it is pinched, may decrease. Over-hydration, caused by administration of excess IV fluids, may cause swelling of tissue, increased respiratory rate and abnormal lung sounds.

Increase or decrease IV fluid administration rate as need is indicated by these parameters.

    • 3

In critical-care patients, use blood tests to monitor hydration status and monitor central venous pressure. Blood tests include blood urea nitrogen, urine specific gravity and hematocrit, a measure of red blood cell concentration. Hematocrit, blood urea nitrogen and urine specific gravity may increase during dehydration.

Monitor central venous pressure to avoid dehydration and over-hydration. Central venous pressure is measured with a manometer attached to a catheter placed in a vein near the heart. It may increase during over-hydration and decrease with dehydration.

    • 4

Monitor specific needs addressed through intravenous fluids for specific conditions.

For example, patients may need calcium and potassium supplementation in pancreatitis cases, and blood tests guide fluid therapy in addressing these needs. A clinician may need to add electrolytes to IV fluids.

  • Why Do People Put Preservatives in Our Food?

People have added preservatives to food for thousands of years. Preservatives maintain the freshness, appearance and safety of food and increase the length of time food can be stored before consuming. Preservatives act as antimicrobial agents and antioxidants to retard spoilage.
  • Role of Preservatives

    • Chemical preservatives extend the freshness of food by inhibiting the growth of microorganisms and reducing oxidation retarding the ripening process. Preservatives cannot replace sterilization processes for packaged foods. Adequately frozen, dried, canned or pickled foods may not need added preservatives.

    Types

    • Natural preservatives include salt, sugar, vinegar, alcohol, citric acid and ascorbic acid. Chemical preservatives include sulphites, nitrites, benzoates and sorbates. Antimicrobial preservatives maintain food freshness by deterring the growth of molds and bacteria. Antioxidants preserve food by preventing discoloration and rancidity due to oxidation.

    Regulations

    • According to the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, preservatives in food should be safe for use, labeled properly on the food and used for the purpose it was intended. Preservatives should not be used to mask damaged or inferior food products or make food appear to be of better quality than it is.

    Safety

    • Some chemical preservatives have been found to have adverse effects on health. Benzoates and sulphites may trigger allergies. Butylates may cause liver and kidney problems and high blood pressure. BHA may cause cancer and liver disease.

    • 7

Massage your toes with your foot lotion to moisturize them. Apply nail strengthening polish on your nails if needed.

  • How to Source Casein

Casein is the predominant protein found in milk, constituting 80% of its total protein. It is referred to as a "slow-digesting protein" because it forms a clot or gel in the stomach which results in a slower release of amino acids. This characteristic of casein makes it particularly attractive to body builders who are interested in sustaining muscle mass and preventing muscle breakdown while they sleep. Casein is now becoming widely available and can be sourced from a number of outlets.
    • 1

Visit your local health food store and inquire about casein powder. It should be located in the protein powder aisle.

  • What Should Your Weight Be for Your Height?

Maintaining a healthy weight is important to overall health. People who are overweight are more likely to struggle with diabetes, heart disease, cancer and stroke. For adults, an accurate way to determine healthy weight according to height is to find the Body Mass Index.
  • Body Mass Index (BMI)

    • The Body Mass Index (BMI) uses a person's weight and height to measure body fat. To calculate the BMI, take current weight and divide by height squared. Next, divide that answer by 708.

    Body Mass Index Chart

    • For adults, the BMI range for optimal weight is the same for men and women. This range is 18.5-24.9. For children and teenagers, the BMI range changes based on sex and age of the individual.

    Growth Charts

    • From birth, children are weighed and measured at the doctor's office. These measurements are plotted on a growth chart. This determines what percentile that child falls into for both height and weight. Ideally, both height and weight should be about the same percentile.

  • Red Rashes With a White Ring on the Skin

Determining the cause behind a painful, itchy rash often makes the entire ordeal more challenging. Several conditions may cause a red and white rash; in each case, the whiteness could have a ring-like appearance.
  • Brown Recluse Bite

    • The bite of a brown recluse spider appears as bull's-eye, with a red, ring-shaped rash surrounding a white ring. The bite burns and itches for approximately ten minutes. It then enlarges and may be accompanied by fever and vomiting, among other symptoms. Treat the bite with an antibiotic ointment to prevent it from worsening. Consult a doctor immediately as well.

    Eczema

    • Eczema occurs when allergies irritate the skin. The mild rash looks flat and white, but severe flare-ups cause the skin to raise up in red patches. Treat most cases of Eczema with a hydrocortisone cream.

    Psoriasis

    • Psoriasis causes a scaly white rash to appear over red, irritated skin. This usually occurs on the elbows and knees. Skin moisturizers, ointments and oral medications and treat psoriasis.

    Tinea Versicolor

    • A yeast fungus called tinea versicolor develops colonies on the skin, which change the skin to a reddish brown. White spots may also occur while the rash remains. Treatments include creams and anti-fungal pills.

    Tips to Stop Baldness

    • Keep that full head of hair Tooga/Digital Vision/Getty Images

Hair loss can occur for a variety of reasons. Your diet, environment and genes can all affect your hair. Androgenetic alopecia, also known as male or female pattern baldness, is the leading cause of hair loss in men and women, according to the American Hair Loss Association. This condition occurs when enzymes in the body convert testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT then attacks the follicles, causing the hair to fall out. You can reduce the amount of hair you lose by using a treatment which lowers your DHT levels.

    Medications for Men

    • Finasteride, which is marketed under the brand name Propecia, is an F.D.A. approved treatment for male pattern baldness. It stops hair loss by curbing the production of DHT. According to the American Hair Loss Association, Propecia can prevent further hair loss while significantly increasing new hair growth.

Minoxidil (Rogaine) was the first medication to receive approval from the F.D.A. to treat male pattern baldness. It was initially a treatment for high blood pressure. Then people noticed their hair began to thicken after they started taking the medication. Due to this discovery, Minoxidil is now available as a topical hair loss treatment. Minoxidil may only offer limited results since it does not affect DHT levels.

    Medications for Women

    • Minoxidil 2 percent is the only F.D.A. approved medication for androgenetic alopecia in women, according to the American Hair Loss Association. Minoxidil works better for women than it does for men. It works best for women with mild to moderate hair loss. If you have severe hair loss, you may be able to get a prescription for Minoxidil 5 percent from a dermatologist.

A handful of other medications are known to stop hair loss in women but they are not approved for this purpose. Blood pressure medications, diuretics, histamine blockers, and anti-fungal medications prevent DHT from attacking the hair follicles. Hormone replacement therapy and birth control pills can also thicken your hair. Talk with your physician before using any of these medications to treat hair loss since they are not approved for this purpose.

    Herbs

    • If you are wary of using medications to stop your hair from falling out, you may want to consider using herbs. Saw palmetto can reduce hair loss because it prevents enzymes in the body from converting testosterone into DHT. Gotu kola also reduces the production of DHT. Ginseng helps strengthen the strands by improving their ability to absorb protein.

    Vitamins

    • Certain vitamins can also help reduce hair loss. Vitamin B helps the hair grow and stay healthy. You can get vitamin B by eating nuts, eggs, soybeans and peas. Other forms of vitamin B such as biotin, B5, and B3 are also necessary for hair growth.

Vitamins E and C stimulate hair growth by increasing blood flow to the scalp. An adequate supply of blood must reach the hair follicles in order for them to thrive.

  • How to Identify a Green Chili

The green chili is a type of pepper known for its spicy taste. These vegetables can be used in dishes such as salsa, burritos or as toppings for pizza. Green chilies are particularly popular in southwest regions, such as New Mexico and Texas, in part because they are a financially important crop in agriculture. Some people have trouble identifying green chilies at supermarkets and confuse them with other vegetables such as green onions. Follow these guidelines and you will never confuse green chillies again.
    • 1

Identify by color. Green chillies, as the name suggests, are green unlike other peppers, which might be red or yellow.

    • 2

Identify by size. Green chilies are typically a couple inches in length and are relatively thin.

    • 3

Identify by appearance. Green chilies have thin stems and a pointed tip.

    • 4

Identify by taste. Green chilies have a spicy favor.

  • Why Shouldn't You Watch TV Before Bed?

For some, falling asleep with the television on is a nightly ritual. In fact, about 50 percent of adults do just this, according to Telegraph online. The question is whether this habit is good for you. Most experts agree that for adults -- and especially children -- it is not healthy. Limiting your television time in general, and in particular before bed, is recommended.
  • Sleep Habits Disturbed

    • Waking up more often or taking a long time to fall asleep are the results of nighttime television watching. Especially if the content of what you are watching is exciting or violent. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, television before bed is simply too stimulating. Reading or taking a bath before bed is more likely to lead to a full night's sleep.

    Chronic Health Issues Develop

    • When the total amount of time that you sleep is jeopardized, chronic health issues such as heart disease or obesity develop. Watching television before bed leads to shortened sleep duration, according to Dr. Mathias Basner from the University of Pennsylvania's Sleep and Chronobiology Center. People are simply not getting enough sleep because they are distracted by TV shows and put off sleep.

    Mental Fatigue Happens

    • A low alertness level is a result of lack of sleep. If you stay up late watching a favorite television show, you are not getting enough rest. Sleep is designed to allow the body to recharge and shut down. Your muscles and brain need a break. Being foggy and out-of-touch the next day can be lessened by turning off the television at night.

  • Can Workers' Comp Make Me Change Doctors?

Roughly 15 workers a day lose their lives in some kind of work-related injury or illness and over 15,000 more are injured. When faced with injury, knowing that you have someone on your side that you can trust makes the process a little easier and less intimidating.
  • Function

    • Workers' compensation insurance is a mandatory state program that offers medical care and loss of wages to an employee when directly relating to an injury, accident or occupational disease while at work. Employers must provide this program to the employee at no cost.

    Considerations

    • Workers' compensation rules vary by state. In general, your insurance carrier must approve a doctor at the time of your accident and any follow-up treatments necessary. In some states, you must select a doctor from an employer-sanctioned list. That said, unless state court orders a change of doctors, neither your employer nor workers' compensation may compel you to change doctors.

    Legal considerations

    • Consult with your local state workers' compensation board. If necessary, seek advice from an attorney. Most initial consultations are little to no cost and after the first visit, many firms charge no fee until you collect on your claim.

  • Pros for Artificial Sweetener

    • About 180 million Americans use artificial sweeteners to replace real sugar, whether due to health issues or a desire to shed unwanted pounds, according to AOL Health. Although some in the medical field have expressed concern over a link between artificial sweeteners and cancer, the Food and Drug Administration has approved five sweeteners: aspartame, saccharin, sulacrose, acesulifame K and neotame.

    Helps Weight Loss

    • A 1999 study by the Mayo Clinic found that you can increase your metabolism while chewing sugar-free gum. The experiment showed that when an individual chewed this gum at a rate of 100 times per minute, his metabolism rose by 20 percent. Chewing gum all day could cause a drop of 11 pounds per year. In another study, Harvard University researchers followed two groups of women: one group consumed artificial sweetener, while a control group did not. The women who used the sugar substitute lost more weight and regained it at a slower rate than those who did not.

    Sweetness More Intense

    • Because the sweetness of some sugar substitutes are more intense, the body will crave less of it. As a result, the diabetic will not have to worry about a spike in his blood sugar due to over-consumption. This is also welcome news for a person who merely wants to increase his likelihood of losing more pounds.

    Sheilds Oral Health

    • Replacing sugary foods with artificial sweeteners has the potential of preventing cavities, according to the American Dietetic Association. The act of chewing sugarless gum a mere 20 minutes a day can neutralize the acids that lead to dental caries, which are tooth decay agents present in sodas, energy drinks, tart candies, and vinegar-containing foods such as vinaigrette salad dressings.

    Diabetics

    • Though diabetics must still monitor their intake of sugar substitutes, their bodies receive artificial sweeteners quite well when they consume such foods in moderation. Sugar alcohols such as sorbitol, xylitol, and maltitol have half the calories of traditional sugar.

  • Different Types of Magma

    • Three recognized types of magma push toward the Earth's surface today. Don Smith/Photodisc/Getty Images

You may first think of fiery orange eruptions when you think of magma, but the different types of magma behave differently. Three types of magma exist on Earth today, and an extinct fourth type is unable to form on our cooled planet. Each magma type has a different chemical make-up, though the types are all mostly made up of silica and other minerals. Underground pressure builds up to push magma to the surface, sometimes in a huge explosion and sometimes in a slow-moving trickle.

    Basaltic Magma

    • Basaltic magma is made up of 45 to 55 percent silica. It is high in iron, magnesium and calcium and is low in potassium and sodium. The temperature of basaltic magma is around 1,000 to 1,200 degrees Celsius, based on laboratory measurement and limited field operations. Scientists find it difficult to determine an exact temperature because it is dangerous to get close enough to magma to measure it. Basaltic magma is the most fluid of the three types of magma, though it is still 10,000 to 100,000 times less fluid than water. It also has the lowest amount of gas of the three types. Basalt magma is found at Earth's "hot spots," such as Hawaii. When it cools, basaltic magma becomes basalt rock.

    Andesitic Magma

    • Andesitic magma is the "middle" magma in terms of heat; fluidity, or speed of flow; and gas content. It is probably 800 to 1,000 degrees Celsius. It is made up of 55 to 65 percent silica with average amounts of iron, magnesium, calcium, potassium and sodium. When cooled, andesitic magma becomes andesite rock. Andesitic magma is somewhat explosive, coming to the crust of the Earth at reverse fault areas. In these spots, two plates in the Earth's crust move against each other in opposite directions, and the top piece moves up toward the surface rather than toward the planet's center. Small- to medium-sized earthquakes also release andesitic magma. An example of andesitic magma is the eruption of Mount St. Helens in Oregon.

    Felsic Magma

    • Felsic-type magmas include ryolitic and dacite magmas, which are very thick and slow-moving. Felsic magma seems to form when the Earth's crust melts with seawater. It is highly explosive when erupting from volcanoes. Felsic magma is made up of 65 to 75 percent silica. It is low in iron, magnesium and calcium and is high in potassium and sodium. Compared to other types of magma, felsic magma is cool, reaching 650 to 800 degrees Celsius, and is high in volatile, or unstable, gases and melted rocks. Felsic magma forms huge calderas, like the Yellowstone caldera. When cooled, it forms ryolite or granite rock.

    Ultramafic Magma

    • Today, our planet is too cool for ultramafic, or komatiite, magma to form. This is probably a good thing, since ultramafic magma would be the hottest and fastest-flowing of the magmas, running almost as fast as water down a volcano. In the distant past, ultramafic lava could reach as high as 1,600 degrees Celsius. Now lava rarely reaches above 1,200 degrees.

  • Natural Ways to Release Dopamine

    • Eggs naturally increase dopamine levels. Max Oppenheim/Digital Vision/Getty Images

Dopamine is a naturally occurring chemical in the brain, which is often referred to as "the happy hormone". It is responsible for feelings pleasure we experience during activities such as exercise or eating food. It is important we have the correct amount of dopamine released into the brain, too much or too little can lead to problems such as anxiety. Although you may increase your dopamine levels through taking supplements, it is actually simple to increase your levels naturally by undertaking certain activities.

    Diet

    • Diet plays a crucial part in affecting your mood. Poor nutrition, including a high intake of junk foods, often leads to moodiness, sluggish behavior and lethargy. However, eating the correct foods can seriously boost your mood by naturally increasing our dopamine levels. MedHelp.com notes that proteins such as milk, eggs, cheese and fish are all dopamine-increasing foods. Consuming a healthy diet can significantly affect the way you feel and boost your energy levels. Certain fad-diets such as low carbohydrate diets can also lead to depleted dopamine levels. Reduce your intake of foods high in sugar and saturated fats, as these will deplete dopamine levels.

    Exercise

    • One of the easiest and quickest ways to increase your dopamine levels is through exercise. Those who suffer from anxiety or depression are often advised to exercise because of the "natural high" it produces. Even low to moderate intensity exercise such as hiking, swimming or yoga can elevate dopamine levels according to Claire Dorotik, a physical health and wellness specialist. Choose an exercise that you can enjoy and do it regularly to lift your mood. Try to exercise at least four times per week for 30 to 40 minutes at a time.

    Game Playing

    • Increase the amount of competitive and playful activities in to your life. According to researchers at the University of Southern California, playing video games in moderation can elevate your dopamine levels. "Discover Magazine" reports that dopamine plays a significant role in how the brain handles both reward and exploration. Playing games and engaging in "fun" activities can enable you to create and explore new characters and environments, thus influencing our dopamine levels.

    Happy Relationships

    • Nurturing relationships with friends, family and loved ones can boost dopamine levels. Cultivating relationships is a positive way to boost self-confidence and avoid feelings of isolation. Engaging in group activities and enjoying a balanced social life is an important part of feeling good.
