1996 Ford Taurus 24 Valve Engine Specifications

When Ford introduced the Taurus in the 1986 model-year, it was immediately recognized as being ahead of its time, both structurally and mechanically. The 1996 model-year saw a lot of changes. The body was redesigned and a new engine was introduced: the 3.0 Duratec.
  • Output

    • This engine was a higher-performance option over the base 3.0 OHV engine. This engine produced 200 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 195 pound-feet of torque at 4,700 rpm.

    Configuration

    • This engine was a V-6 configuration. It had 24 valves--four valves per cylinder--in a single-overhead-cam (SOHC) configuration, meaning there was one camshaft in the top of the cylinder head. It was powered by regular gasoline and had multi-point-fuel-injection (MPFI).

    Internals

    • It had a bore--cylinder width--of 3.39 inches and a stroke (piston travel inside the cylinder) of 3.39 inches. The total displacement of this engine was 2,997 cubic centimeters, or 3.0 liters.

    Economy

    • Being placed in a family car meant that the 3.0, 24-valve engine must get good fuel economy. This engine got 20 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway.
