7 Levels of Dowsing

    • Map dowsing is a level-three dowsing activity. pendulum image by e-pyton from Fotolia.com

A dowsing pendulum is usually a long piece of string or thread with a heavy object attached to the end. The pendulum then swings, usually in circles, to divine an answer to a question. A dowsing rod is used in a similar way, in that you ask questions and the answer is divined by the rod. The dowsing rod is usually a Y-shaped rod made of metal or wood that will move up and down in answer to questions.

    On-Site Dowsing

    • The first level of dowsing deals directly with dowsing in the immediate area of suspected ley lines or water, for example. The dowser will stand with a pendulum or dowsing rod directly over the site and see what activity this produces in the apparatus being used.

    Horizon Dowsing

    • Level two deals with a wider search area. If you suspect that something can be found in an area but you are not sure where, horizon dowsing is the answer. First, ask your question, such as "Where is the nearest water source in this area?" The apparatus should divine and lead you to that source.

    Distance Dowsing

    • Level three is distance or map dowsing. This is used when you may not be able to see your target at all, on the horizon or otherwise. You would then ask the question from a distance or over a map to locate what you are looking for with the pendulum or rod.

    Imformation or Deviceless Dowsing

    • Level four is getting onto a quite advanced level, in which you get rid of your dowsing equipment (pendulum or dowsing rod) and use only your mind. For instance, you would ask a question about a person or a place such as "Is Shelia going to marry Bill?" Then you "see" the pendulum or rod in your head, giving the answer. All of the first four levels are information gathering techniques, and once these levels are mastered, you can attempt level five.

    Channeling Energy

    • Level five is concerned with channeling the natural energies around us. In this process, the dowser uses the energies that he has been working with not for information but to heal or affect something that is outside of himself. This could be another person; for instance, if a person has a headache or other ailment, the energies should be channeled through the dowser to the recipient in order to heal the affliction. This "healing" or "energy channeling" will take some time to master and is often used in conjunction with reading auras, the chakras and spiritual house cleaning.

    Toward Enlightenment

    • The sixth level of dowsing is extremely rare, as this level is actually the ability not only to heal but also to go further, such as reconstructing damage inside a persons body (e.g., form new cell tissue) through dowsing. It could even be used to change environmental factors, such as making it rain in a certain area. At this level, the dowser attempts to become one with nature and the natural forces around us.

    Self-Mastery or Reflexive

    • The final level, level seven, is becoming one with the Creator. It is completely knowing yourself and becoming part of the Creator at the same time. This is a very rare achievement and it is akin to the Buddhist belief of using Zen meditation to achieve this oneness with the world, nature, the Creator or a higher spiritual being in order to do good in the world.
