Aeromedical Training in the Military

Aeromedical personnel must know how to prevent and care for common illnesses. In addition, they should also learn how to treat problems caused specifically by flight and space travel, like radiation exposure or oxygen deprivation.

Purpose

• Aerospace medical training teaches students how to care and treat fellow service members on helicopters, jets and other types of aircraft. In addition, the military trains aerospace medical personnel in the field of preventative and occupational medicine. These trainees also learn how to determine if a soldier is physically fit enough to fly.

Requirements

• In order to specialize in aerospace medicine, a trainee must first receive their bachelor's degree from an accredited university or military program. The military's aerospace medicine curriculum consists of one year of academic study, followed by a year of residency work.

Residency Programs

• The military features two residency programs in the United States. The Air Force's Brooks City Base in San Antonio, Texas offers this type of training, along with the Naval Aerospace Medical Institute in Pensacola, Florida.
