Aoac International Protocols

    • The AOAC International's role is to provide tools and processes needed for scientists to come to consensus around protocols for experiments, usually having to do with food and nutrients. An AOAC protocol outlines a scientific study. It must follow the organization's regulations and guidelines and must pass a rigorous review. The organization began as the Association of Analytical Chemists in the late 19th century. Today the organization, whose mission is" worldwide confidence in analytical results," is officially known as AOAC International.

    The Protocols' Function

    • The function of the protocols is to develop a well-designed experiment with only one variable so that a definitive determination can be made. Determinations are generally made about instruments to measure anything related to food and health, microbiology and genetic engineering.

    Validation

    • "Validation" is a term used to describe a single laboratory data collection procedure. An AOAC "protocol" refers to the practices and procedures of a full-scale study. Both types of investigations are under review by the general referee, safety advisor, statistician and methods committee.

Training In How to Write Protocols

    • AOAC International offers training in how to write quality protocols. They should be "clear, concise and unambiguous" and be part of the larger study that leads to an objective and definitive determination. They should also conform to the style guide of the organization.
