Are Day Lilies Deer Resistant?

Deer problems are becoming more common, according to the University of Michigan Extension, as people encroach on their habitats. No plant is deer-proof, but some are more tempting to deer than others. Most daylilies are considered fair game by these furry marauders.
  • Considerations

    • Daylilies are a palatable snack for deer, with the exception of Stella d 'Oro daylilies, which are usually deer resistant. Keep in mind that hungry deer will eat just about anything, especially when the deer population is large and food supplies are low.

    Sturdiness

    • One of daylilies' most endearing qualities is their hardiness. Daylilies can withstand herbicides, drought, freezing temperatures and even intentional efforts to remove them. While deer may nibble them to stubs, chances are they'll bounce back within a few weeks. Deer are most likely to nibble young, lush plants. As daylilies mature and become more woody, they're less tempting.

    Solutions

    • The most effective solution is an electrified fence, but if this sounds drastic, there are a few other options. Dogs are very effective at keeping all sorts of wildlife out of the garden. Plant daylilies with plants known to repel deer, such as lilacs, wormwood, lavender and catmint. Commercial preparations such as coyote urine may repel deer, although they usually require frequent reapplications.
