Before Massage
-
Find a quiet, comfortable, warm spot free from distractions. Have all supplies within arms reach so you don't have to leave the baby. You will need massage oil, a soft towel or blanket for the baby to lay on, and anything else you prefer. You might want to play soft music, or have a small towel to wipe your hands with.
Before the first massage, test a small amount of massage oil on the baby for a possible allergic reaction. It is best to use oils with all-natural ingredients, free of dyes and perfumes.
Prepare Yourself and Baby
-
Strip the baby down to a diaper. Sit with the soles of your feet together, forming a diamond shape with your legs. Place the blanket or towel over your legs, then place the baby with her head cradled on your feet. Put a small amount of oil in your palm and rub your hands together, coating your hands and fingers with oil so they will move smoothly over the baby's body.
Massage Techniques and Tips
-
Massage the baby in sections, starting with the tummy, then moving in no particular order to the legs, chest, arms, back, head and face. Use firm strokes. Pay attention to your baby's cues to determine how long the massage lasts. If she becomes fussy, try something new or stop. Remember that this should be an enjoyable time for both you and your baby.
