Butterfly Pavilion Instructions

If you know what resources to use, learning about insects does not always have to be "yucky" and boring. The Butterfly Pavilion by Insect Lore is a great way to see firsthand the metamorphosis from a caterpillar to a butterfly. Observers can take care of the insects from when they are larvae to when they transform into butterflies. This metamorphosis is sure to interest any observer. In addition to being interesting, the Butterfly Pavilion is very educational as well as easy to set up and care for.

      Mail the included certificate to the address listed. Your larvae will arrive in 1 to 2 weeks in two containers.

      Keep both the caterpillar containers out of direct sunlight once they arrive in them mail. Make sure to also keep the containers upright and indoors. Keep the lid on at all times. All the food needed is already inside the containers.

      Wait for your caterpillars to form their chrysalides. This should take anywhere from 7 to 10 days. It is important not to move the containers during this stage.

      Place the chrysalides in the observation habitat.

      To do this, gently remove the container lid from the container. Remove the paper disk the chrysalides are attached to. Remove any loose silk strands. Use a safety pin to attach the disc to the mesh netting. Place the second disc at least three inches away from the first.

      Wait for butterflies to emerge from the chrysalides. This should take 7 to 10 days after the formation of the chrysalides.

      Feed your butterflies.

      To do this, stir 3 teaspoons of sugar in a cup of water. Stir until mixed completely. Place flowers on the floor of the habitat. Use the eyedropper (included) to drop the sugar water onto the flowers. You can also feed them sliced oranges.

      Release your butterflies. Do this if the daytime weather is above 55 degrees.
