Can a Mini Rose Plant Grow Big Outside?

Miniature rose bushes are classified according to the size of their blooms, not the size of the plant. To be classified as a miniature rose, the bloom must be 1 1/2 inches in diameter or less.
  • Size

    • Miniature rose bushes typically range from 6 to 18 inches in height. Climbing miniature roses may reach heights of 5 feet. The size of your miniature rose bush depends on the cultivar.

    Location

    • When planted in organic rich soil in a sunny location, miniature roses thrive in the flower garden. The Colorado State University Extension recommends planting several mini roses together to create the best show of color.

    Maintenance

    • Prune miniature rose bushes in the spring before new growth appears by cutting stems back to the lowest set of outward-facing buds. This encourages new growth and more abundant blooming.

    Considerations

    • Miniature roses typically require more frequent watering, as their root systems are shallow. Water when soil feels dry to the touch and keep it moist. Avoid soggy soil.

    Nutritional Needs

    • Fertilize miniature roses with rose food every three weeks beginning when new growth appears in the spring. Cease fertilizer in August to allow the rose bush to prepare for winter.
