How to Remove Auto Body Rust

Rust is a reddish-brown coating that forms on iron or steel when the metal becomes exposed to oxygen in the presence of moisture. Metal continues to corrode once the rust forms, so you must remove rust spots as they form. In addition, rust spots on your vehicle can look unsightly and affect its resale value if you allow them to remain. You can easily remove auto body rust with the help of some basic tools.

      Put on your safety goggles and clean the surface the rusted area of your car thoroughly to prepare the surface for sanding.

      Sand the rusted area gently with your sander until it becomes smooth and blends in with the painted area around the rust.

      Carefully remove all the rust by gently grinding the area with handheld grinder.

      Clean the area again, and apply a thin layer of auto body primer over it. Allow the primer to dry, and repeat the process of applying primer and allowing it to dry two more times.

      Apply a thin layer of paint that matches the color of your vehicle over the primed area, and allow it to dry. Repeat this process two additional times. Allow the paint to dry for the final time, then wash and wax your car.
