Located at the foot of the Rocky Mountains, Boulder, Colo., has an illustrious Wild West history as a supply town for gold miners, but is best known today as a liberal enclave and the home of the main campus of the University of Colorado and the Buddhist-inspired Naropa University. Recreation abounds in the area, which features thousands of acres of hiking, rock climbing and wildlife preserves, along with a thriving arts scene. A number of inexpensive hotels are available close to the heart of the city.
