Chemicals to Get Out Cat Urine

  • White Vinegar

    • A mixture of one part white vinegar to three parts water will neutralize the odor. Use slightly more vinegar for a stronger smell or stain. Cat urine contains ammonia, which is extremely acidic. Vinegar, which is basic, will cancel out the ammonia, leaving salt and water. Spray the solution on the stain and let it sit for roughly five minutes.

    Baking Soda

    • A tablespoon of baking soda drizzled over the stain where you applied vinegar is also helpful. Baking soda, which is a base solution, neutralizes strong odors remaining from the vinegar and cat urine, and also absorbs moisture.

    Hydrogen Peroxide

    • Hydrogen peroxide is an environmentally friendly chemical used to bleach organic stains. A mixture of three-quarters of a cup of hydrogen peroxide and one tbsp. dish soap should be poured over the baking powder and used to scrub the remaining stain. If you are treating a porous surface you should test the hydrogen peroxide mixture on an inconspicuous spot first to make sure it won't become discolored.
