Deer-Resistant, Late-Blooming Perennials

As hungry deer prepare for winter, they may begin to browse on your late-season garden. Choose from a variety of late-blooming, deer-resistant perennials to keep the color and texture alive until well after the first frost.
  • Joe Pye Weed

    • Eupatorium maculatum, commonly known as Joe Pye weed, flowers in late summer. The sweet-smelling, purplish blooms attract butterflies and bees. The dried seed heads -- attractive in the winter garden -- can be clipped, saved and sown in spring to establish new colonies.

    Yarrow

    • Yarrow -- achillea -- is a native North American flower. Available in a wide range of colors from deep red to bright yellow, yarrow blooms continuously throughout the summer. Dry yarrow flowers for indoor arrangements.

    Black-Eyed Susan

    • Rudbeckia's bright yellow, daisy-like flowers appear in midsummer and bloom continuously for up to 8 weeks. Self-seeding, black-eyed susans form dense clumps of showy, butterfly-attracting flowers.
