Mercury Classic 40 HP Specifications

      Mercury Marine was founded in 1939 and is part of the larger Brunswick Corporation, which is based out of Forest Lakes, Illinois. Mercury Marine produces outboard, inboard and stern-drive marine engines that are intended for use on just about any type of boat there is. The outboard motors that Mercury makes range in power from 2 horsepower all the way to 350 horsepower. A 40-horsepower outboard engine can power a boat that is up to 16 feet in length.

    Engine Specifications

    • The Mercury 40 horsepower outboard has a three cylinder, in-line, 747 cc engine. The fuel induction system is a single overhead camshaft. This single overhead camshaft contains two valves per cylinder. The cylinder bore diameter on the Mercury 40 horsepower engine is 2.56 inches. The stroke piston length on this engine is 2.95 inches. This engine is thermostatically cooled, but also features a raw-water cooling system as well. The Mercury 40 horsepower has a capacitor discharge ignition system, which also features an electronic spark advance.

    Performance Specifications

    • The Mercury 40 horsepower outboard engine will reach full throttle anywhere in between 5,500 and 6,000 revolutions per minute. The fuel system is carbureted, and this carburetor is in the constant-velocity style. A 6-amp, 76-watt alternator provides this 40 horsepower engine with its electrical supply. At full throttle, the Mercury 40's power to weight ratio is 40 horsepower to 30 kilograms.

    Other Specifications

    • The gears on the Mercury 40 horsepower are in the order of forward to neutral to reverse, and the gear case's ratio is 2.00 to 1. This outboard engine does not have electronic start, and must be started manually. The steering device on this engine is a tiller kit. The trim system is a gas assist, and the exhaust system is run through the propeller. The shallow water trim range is 16 degrees. Mercury recommends that 87 octane that is up to 10 percent ethanol, as well as Mercury 4-Stroke Outboard Oil. The warning system on the Mercury 40 horsepower will let the operator know when there is low oil pressure and if the engine is being overheated or over-revved.
