Fruits and Vegetables
-
While no plants are truly deer-proof, a number of vegetables are rarely eaten by these animals. Watermelon and cantaloupe are two fruit options, while certain vegetables like tomatoes, peppers, onions, cucumbers and eggplants are not favored by deer as food, and thus seldom damaged.
Herbs and Spices
-
Deer prefer not to eat plants that have pungent flavors and strong odors, which makes herbs ideal choices for gardens in areas prone to deer damage. Try growing mint, oregano, rosemary, sage and thyme.
Considerations
-
Certain garden plants are suited to different climates, soil types and conditions. Check the U.S. Department of Agriculture Plant Hardiness Zone map to decide which vegetables and herbs are best for your region. A local garden expert or cooperative extension also may be able to help you match the right plants to the conditions in your garden.
