Homemade Mildew Remover

Mildew is often found in a home's bathroom. It can look like gray or blue-green tentacles growing on your bathroom tile or grout. You can remove and prevent mildew using homemade cleaners.

Removal

• To remove mildew growing on shower tiles, in your tub, or on your bathroom ceiling, create a mixture of 1 part white vinegar to 1 part water. Put it in a spray bottle, and thoroughly spray the moldy area with the solution, then wipe it away with a sponge, according to "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Green Cleaning," by Mary Findley and Linda Formichelli (2009). To clean mold from grout, create a paste by adding water to baking soda, and spread it on the moldy area. Let it dry, then rinse it away.

Prevention

• You can prevent mildew from building up by creating a mixture of 1/2 cup of hydrogen peroxide and 1 cup water in a spray bottle. Spray problem areas with the mixture, and it will help stop mildew from gaining a foothold in your home.

Considerations

• Reducing humidity in your home can help control mold growth. Run an exhaust fan while showering or leave the bathroom door or window open. Use a squeegee to wipe down the shower liner and walls after each use to remove moisture from the room, according to "Green Cleaning For Dummies," by Elizabeth B. Goldsmith and Betsy Sheldon (2008).
