Difference Between a Deck & a Porch

While the words "deck" and "porch" are often used interchangeably, they are actually two different structures that have their own purposes and design features.
  • Deck

    • According to an article on the International Association of Certified Home Inspectors (InterNACHI) website written by Nick Gromicko and Rob London, a deck is a wooden floor raised from the ground and attached to the back of the house. A deck can be covered or uncovered, but must be contained by a railing for safety. Decks are used for outdoor gatherings and parties.

    Porch

    • In the same article, Gromicko and London describe a porch as structure located at the front of the house that is used as a covered entrance before the entryway. Unlike decks, a porch is usually integrated into the overall design of the house, and is not an attached structure that has little to do with the architectural elements of the home.

    Patios

    • Decks are sometimes confused with patios as well. According to Gromicko and London, the main difference between patios and decks is that a patio is made from cement or stone, while a deck is constructed from wood. They both are used for outdoor dining and entertaining.
