Directions for Making a Mobile for a Baby's Room

A homemade mobile can add a whimsical touch to your baby's room. If your baby has older brothers or sisters, this can be a project you share with them so they feel included in the goings on of the baby, which can help form a bond between the siblings and the baby. Mobiles, themselves, are easy to create, but the challenge may be deciding how to decorate it. Be creative and use anything from toys to family photos and brightly colored ribbon.

Use four wooden dowels to make two cross shapes. Create a joint at the bisections with string. Wrap the string around both dowels where they meet, going around several times to bind them to each other. Finish by tying a knot to secure the joint. Repeat for both crosses.

Cut a 6 inch length of string. Tie one end of the string to one of the crosses and the other end to the other cross. Decide how low you want the mobile to hang from the ceiling, and cut an appropriately sized length of string. Tie the string to one of the crosses. This will be the top part of the mobile. If desired, add more tiers to the mobile by making more crosses and connecting them with string.

Cut various lengths of string or ribbon and use them to tie small toys or stuffed animals, paper crafts, photos, wood crafts or any other small objects to the ends of the crosses. Avoid using things with small, removable parts as they may pose a choking hazard. Bear in mind that you must balance the objects to some degree or your mobile will be lopsided.

Screw an eye screw into the ceiling over the baby's crib. Tie the loose string you tied to the top of the mobile to the eye screw and gently lower it so that it hangs above the crib.
