End Rot on a Zucchini Blossom

Blossom-end rot is a common condition in the vegetable garden. It strikes a number of vegetable crops, including zucchini. Although there is no way to halt the progress of blossom-end rot on a zucchini, you may prevent it from starting.
  • Symptoms

    • The first symptom the gardener may notice is a dead patch on the blossom end---the end opposite the stem---of the zucchini. The spot then grows larger and appears to be oozing juice.

    Cause

    • Blossom-end rot is a calcium deficiency rather than a disease. It may occur when there is too much moisture in the soil or if plants are given too much fertilizer, especially nitrogen.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Watering zucchini only once a week and placing a layer of mulch on the soil around the zucchini may prevent blossom-end rot. Mulch will help keep the soil uniformly moist. Care is required to avoid over-fertilizing zucchini. A fertilizer low in nitrogen is recommended.
