What Does a Busboy Do at a Restaurant?

A restaurant's success and popularity depend on the quality of its service and surroundings as well as the taste and value of its food. A busboy is instrumental in providing good service and maintaining an appealing environment.
  • Job Duties

    • Customer service is the job focus. A busboy assists servers in bringing orders to customers, providing additional items or assistance during the meal, and promptly clearing dishes away at the meal's conclusion. He may help management in site maintenance or help out the kitchen staff in food preparation, maintenance, or getting orders to servers or patrons.

    Skill Requirements

    • Interpersonal communication skills help a busboy successfully interact with co-workers and restaurant customers. Multitasking talents enable him to simultaneously address several projects at once. Attention to detail is required to quickly spot and correct service and maintenance problems.

    Preferred Background

    • A high school diploma or equivalent is generally required. Experience working in a food service environment is helpful. Background in a fast-paced work environment is an asset.
