Medicaid for Children
-
Children under age 19 who live with their parents or caretakers may be eligible for Medicaid even if the family as a unit does not qualify. Several programs exist for children in low-income households. The state bases eligibility for these programs on the age of the minor. For children living with their parents, all income sources determine eligibility. If the child has an income source and lives with a caretaker, only the child's funds factor into the eligibility requirements.
Eligibility for Children
-
The DCF states that to qualify for child-only Medicaid, the minor must be a Florida resident under 19 who lives with an adult caretaker. The child should possess a Social Security number, be a U.S. citizen or a qualified non-citizen. Additionally, if the child benefits from any third-party insurance, it is factored into consideration. No limitation is placed on assets. Income level is a factor. Judgment involves the child's age and a percentage of the Federal Poverty Level.
Check-Up Program
-
Another part of the Medicaid plan for children in Florida is the Child Health Check-Up Program. This service provides routine care and screenings. This is a preventative benefit aimed at keeping children healthy and free from poor medical and dental health.
Programs and Administrators
-
Florida KidCare is a low-cost insurance benefit run by the state. The program has four parts and four distinct administrators. Children age 1 to 4 participate in Medikids run by the Agency for Health Care Administration. Kids age 5 to 18 who are impaired with serious emotional issues can get coverage in a plan administered by the DCF. Special needs children, newborn to age 18, obtain benefits from the Children's Medical Services Network. The federally funded Florida Healthy Kids offers low cost monthly premiums for children 5 to 18.
Unborn Children
-
Pregnant women may qualify for Medicare benefits. In Florida, administration of this program is the responsibility of either a county health department, Regional Intensive Perinatal Care Centers or other providers approved by the state. Income level is a consideration in qualification.
