Funny Prom Ideas

    • Prom is a school dance held for high school juniors and seniors around April of every year. Most proms resemble each other in style and substance: students dress up, eat out for dinner and perhaps show up at the dance in a limo. Depending on the prom committee's budget the event may be held in a school gym, an event hall or a hotel ballroom. No matter where, there aren't that many proms that truly stand out in terms of creativity and ingenuity.

    Prom Themes

    • Most prom themes are predictable: they are either romantic or sentimental in some way. A theme might be based on a song lyric like "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" or "Wind Beneath My Wings." These themes are common and unoriginal. For a truly memorable prom, try going with a theme that will set the tone for the event. For example, a Geek Prom might encourage students to come in characters from "Star Wars" or "The Big Bang Theory." For a Shakespearean theme students could wear period costumes and use inventive speech.

    Dress for Prom

    • Dressing for prom is expensive. Male students will rent tuxedos while female students must buy evening gowns. These garments can cost hundreds of dollars. Some students may be able to afford these outfits while many other students cannot. To level the playing field and to produce a unique prom, encourage students at your school to create outfits from their own closets or perhaps from thrift store finds.

    Add a Dance Contest

    • The race for prom king and queen is always a popularity contest in which many students have no hope of representation. To add a bit of class and talent to your prom, try adding a small ballroom dance competition. You're already dressed up, so why not show off a little with a waltz or a foxtrot? European teenagers know these dances. American teenagers are far behind in terms of class and culture.

    Have a Craziest Car Contest

    • A lot of students show up to their prom in a limousine while others drive their own cars or are dropped off by their parents. To add a fun twist to your prom, encourage your peers to decorate their cars however they wish. They could use streamers, paint, balloons, stick-on lightning bolts or flashy lights. Then, award prizes for the top 3 craziest-looking cars. This could discourage kids from spending too much money on limousines.
