Hair Styles in the 1970s

    • The 1970s were all about freedom and expression. It was a time of change, including changes in hairstyles. Celebrities helped launch certain styles into popularity, and other styles simply evolved on their own. Women and men shared many of the styles in the '70s. The styles allowed people to embrace the natural textures of their hair while sporting what was trendy.

    Feathered Hair

    • Farrah Fawcett was known for her feathered hairstyle, creating a look that became extremely popular in the 1970s. To create the look, keep your hair long, reaching below the shoulders in length. Cut many, feathery layers into the hair and layers around the face. Cut long bangs, reaching the eyes in length, and taper them into the rest of the hair on the sides. Wash your hair and dry it using a large, round brush to add volume and curl to the style. Tease your hair for extra volume and use a curling iron or heated rollers to create large curls. Lightly brush out the curls and flick the hair, feathering it up and away from your face. Hold the style in place with hairspray.

    The Shag

    • The shag hairstyle became popular in the 1970s and was worn by women and men alike. It is characterized by short, layered hair that has a "shaggy" look. To create the style, cut your hair short, reaching to about the chin in length, keeping it slightly longer in the back. Add layers all throughout the hair and cut bangs to fall across the forehead, cutting soft layers into the bangs as well. Apply a styling gel to the hair and use your fingers to gently tousle it, flipping the ends up. The finished look is a layered, purposefully shaggy style.

    Long Hair

    • The '70s was a time of freedom, and wearing the hair long and natural expressed the free style and way of life that was so strong during this generation. Both men and women wore their hair long. It was either worn with its natural wave or dried straight and made sleek. To create this look, dry your hair using a blow dryer and paddle brush, pointing the dryer down on the hair shaft while running the brush down the strands. Part your hair down the middle. Natural waves in the hair add to the style and if desired, do not remove them. To complete the look, apply a gentle styling cream to the hair to prevent fly-aways and smooth the ends.
