Lawn moles are basically harmless animals, but their travel habits can cause major problems on your lawn. These tunneling critters uproot plants, make pathways for other pests and leave your lawn looking like a mess. Although exterminators can come in and take care of your mole problems for you, there are some home remedies that you can use to try and get rid of moles on your own.

    Castor Oil Spray

    • Mix 6 oz of castor oil and 2 tbsp of oil or dish soap in a gallon of water. Mix an ounce of this concentrate per gallon of water and use it to spray the lawn. The website Gardening Know How recommends this mix and adds that it should be applied after every rain or watering.

    Plant Barriers

    • Plant barrier vegetation such as daffodils, marigolds, mole plants and castor beans, all of which turn moles off. Mole plants and castor beans are poisonous and should not be handled by children or eaten by pets.

    Tunnel Stomp

    • Stomp down the long tunnels whenever you see them. According to the Lawn Care Academy website, this irritates the moles and will encourage them to go elsewhere.

    Flooding

    • If you have soil that doesn't absorb water too quickly, insert a garden hose into a tunnel and flood the network of pathways. It will ruin the tunnels and could drown moles caught directly in the water's path. The ideal flooding scenario is to start the flood of water when you see the mole moving between the water source and the surface hole.

    Pesticides

    • Use a pesticide to kill the worms and grubs the mole feeds on. When its main source of food is gone, the mole will move on.
