Measure twice, cut once is the craftsman's mantra. measuring tape image by Horticulture from Fotolia.com

Measure the wall space for the towel rack, also called a towel bar. If the rack will be on a cupboard or door, consider the clearance needed to open and close the door. Locate it where it will be easily accessible, but not in the way.

Pick your material. Dowels and tree branches suggested here are just a couple of examples. You could also use PVC pipe, lengths of bamboo, or suitable other items.

Use a hand or electric saw. wood saw image by Horticulture from Fotolia.com

Use a saw to cut the dowel or branch to the desired length minus the extra length that finials or end caps will take up once they are installed. Take both ends into account. Be sure to wear safety glasses.

Mark the wall for the support location. Measure 2 or 3 inches in from where the ends of the bar will be on the wall. Drill pilot holes smaller than the diameter of the screws you will be using. Use screw anchors if necessary. Attach the supports to the wall with the screws. Refer to package directions.

Attach the finials to the bar with screws or glue or as shown on the package instructions. If you are using a branch, skip the finals for a natural rustic look. Place the dowel or branch on the supports and center it. Leave the bark on or strip it from tree branches for different looks.
