How Do I Become a Construction Estimator?

Before a construction project gets underway, the builder or developer needs to know how much the project will cost. A construction estimator provides this information. Several approaches exist to attain the position.
  • Educational Preparation

    • Obtaining a college degree in construction management, engineering, architecture, building construction or building science is helpful. Applicants without college degrees need a high school diploma or equivalent and completed coursework in mathematics, accounting, drafting, blueprint reading, mechanical drawing or shop.

    Skill Requirements

    • Aspiring construction estimators often get unofficial on-the-job training through summer or part-time work at construction sites where they observe and learn from contractors and foremen. Since a significant part of estimating requires math and using estimating software applications, good computer skills are a plus.

    Training Opportunities

    • General contractors, builders and developers often hire trainees to assist in office operations. This provides those wishing to become construction estimators opportunities to learn the intricacies of engineering, drafting, construction design, job costing and purchasing while working as trainees or interns. Larger companies may offer promising trainees jobs as junior or assistant estimators.
