How to Repair a Fluidmaster Complete Toilet

A Fluidmaster complete toilet is equipped with both Fluidmaster fill components and flush components inside the tank. The flush components release tank water into the bowl when the tank is flushed, while the fill components work to replenish the tank water. Being familiar with the purpose of these components will help you troubleshoot problems with greater speed and fix the issue. For instance, the fill valve cutting on and off to refill the toilet over and over when the toilet is not in use may not indicate a fill valve problem, but rather a flush valve or refill tube problem.

Remove the lid to the toilet tank and place the lid on a soft surface, such as a bed or sofa. Adjust the volume of water that flows from the tank to the bowl with each flush, using the Adjust-A-Flush flapper on the flush valve. Locate the point on the flapper frame where the lift chain connects to it, and use this as the center point for the gauge.

Rotate the flapper by hand to "4" to set the flush at the standard volume of water. Twist the flapper to a higher setting, up to a maximum of "9," to increase the flush volume if it is taking more than one flush to clear the bowl. Twist the flapper to a lower number, going down to "1," to decrease the flush volume.

Twist the shut-off valve completely to the right to shut off the water if the fill valve shuts on and off at a time when the toilet is not being flushed. Make certain the refill tube that runs from the fill valve to the overflow pipe is not stuffed into the overflow pipe down to a point below the tank's water level.

Trim off any excess to the refill tube, using snips. Make certain that the end of the refill tube marked "In" connects to the fill valve nipple, while the end marked "Out" has the angle adapter attached to it. Connect the angle adapter to the top of the overflow pipe on the side nearest the fill valve.

Flush the toilet and continue pressing the handle down to drain the greatest amount of water from the tank. Adjust the lift chain to allow slightly more slack in the chain to allow the flapper to seat fully, without allowing any water to drain from the tank. Pull up on the lift chain to raise the flapper from its seat. Wipe around the rim of the seat, using a soft cloth, to remove any debris.
