How to Remap With the Power Commander

The main function of a Power Commander is to allow its user to fine-tune their motorcycle's fuel setting map, which controls the exact of amount of fuel used by the fuel-injection system based on engine speed and throttle position. Custom maps can be created "on the fly" using the buttons on the Power Commander's face plate or specialized software that uploads the map via USB to the unit. While you can create a map from scratch, using pre-made maps included with the Power Commander 's software can help speed up the process.

Remapping Via Software

  Connect the Power Commander's USB cable to your computer and run the Control Center software.

  Remove the motorcycle's seat to access the Power Commander unit, using the seat lock release lever or by unscrewing the seat bolts with a socket wrench.

  Plug the Power Commander's USB cable and 9-volt battery attachment into the unit. The LED bar graph on the Power Commander's face plate will illuminate completely then leave only the bottom bar lit, indicating that the unit is activated. An indicator on the Control Center software will also be displayed.

  Load the Control Center CD into your computer's CD-ROM. Click on the Open Map File icon on the Control Center's display. Select your computer's CD-ROM when prompted and select your desired fuel map. Click "OK" to load the map onto the Control Center.

  Alter the fuel settings, if desired, using the table displayed on the Control Center. The horizontal row denotes throttle position in 10 percent increments up to 100 percent full throttle. The vertical row indicates engine speed in 500 RPM increments. Click on the desired cell and type a number between 100 to -100 to change the amount fuel delivered at that exact RPM and throttle position.

  Click on the Send Map or Upload Map icon to transmit the fuel map to the Power Commander unit.

  Disconnect the USB cable and 9-volt battery attachment from the Power Commander unit. Reinstall the seat, using the reverse method of removal.

Remapping Via Faceplate Buttons

  Remove the motorcycle's seat to access the Power Commander unit, using the seat lock release lever or by unscrewing the seat bolts with a socket wrench.

  Hold down all three buttons on the unit's faceplate and start the motorcycle to enter into the programming mode. The LED bar graph on the Power Commander's face plate will illuminate completely then leave only the bottom bar lit, indicating that the unit is activated. Release the buttons.

  Adjust the low RPM (0 to 4,000 RPM) fuel settings, using the button on the left of the unit. Press the button once to increase the fuel settings by one bar. Hold the button down to decrease the fuel settings.

  Adjust the mid-range RPM (4,500 to 9,000 RPM) fuel settings, using the button in the middle of the unit. Press the button once to increase the fuel settings by one bar. Hold the button down to decrease the fuel settings.

  Adjust the top-end RPM (9,500 to 14,000 RPM) fuel settings, using the button on the right of the unit. Press the button once to increase the fuel settings by one bar. Hold the button down to decrease the fuel settings.

  Leave the Power Commander unit undisturbed for 15 to 20 seconds to exit the programming mode. The LED bar graph will drop from the last fuel setting and illuminate only the bottom LED bar.

  Turn the motorcycle off and reinstall the seat, following the reverse method of removal.
