How Do I Correct Breast Distortion Due to a Breast Biopsy?

During your biopsy you may have had a significant amount of tissue removed for examination. This removal of tissue can leave your breasts looking significantly different from each other. Depending on the result of the biopsy, you may have several options open to you for reconstruction. Breast reconstruction methods include the flap technique, implants and tissue expansion, all which must be done by a plastic surgeon you trust.

Research the available methods: the flap technique, implants and tissue expansion. With the flap technique, the missing tissue in your breast is reshaped with tissue from a donor site such as your buttocks or abdomen. With implants, a new breast mound is created out of saline or silicone. Tissue expansion is a method of aiding in tissue growth when your existing tissue cannot support an implant. Nipple grafting and tattooing can also restore the shape and color of your nipple.

Interview several plastic surgeons who perform your desired procedure. Note their prices, locations and results by looking at a portfolio. Have a phone consultation or speak to them in person before putting money down. Your plastic surgeon should understand why you seek breast reconstruction and present a realistic picture of what she can accomplish.

Set a surgery date and be prepared to make a deposit a few months beforehand. Have a friend drive you to the surgery and pick you up, as you will not be able to drive for a few weeks afterward. Make followup appointments with the doctor who performed your biopsy and with your plastic surgeon to make sure the tissue remains healthy.
