How Long Will Play-Doh Stay Soft When Closed?

PLAY-DOH is a colorful, non-toxic modeling compound children have played with since it was first introduced in 1956. Although PLAY-DOH is designed to be reusable, care must be taken to ensure the compound does not dry out. If the product does get hard, however, certain techniques can be applied to restore the softness to the compound.
  • Storage

    • In 1986, PLAY-DOH started being packaged in plastic containers with lids that seal tightly to preserve the shelf life of the product. To avoid exposure to undesirable elements, it is best to store your PLAY-DOH in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

    Shelf Life

    • PLAY-DOH is designed to be reusable and will remain soft indefinitely if stored properly with the lid tightly sealed so that it is not exposed to air.

    Restoring Softness

    • Knead in water one drop at a time to restore the softness if your PLAY-DOH has become too hard. Alternatively, you can wrap the compound in a damp paper towel and store it overnight in the original plastic container with the lid tightly sealed.
