Place the drain pan under the Cavalier's radiator petcock. Loosen the petcock. You should be able to use your fingers; but if it is too tight, you can use pliers. Allow the radiator to drain into the drain pan. Close the petcock.
- 2
Loosen the hose clamp on the top hose, using the screwdriver or socket, depending on the type of clamp the hose has. Pull the hose off the radiator and allow it to drain into the drain pan. Pour the used antifreeze into a sealed container for disposal at a recycling facility. Coolant is toxic to animals and humans.
- 3
Remove the radiator cap. Put the garden hose into the radiator and turn the water on. When the coolant runs clear into the drain pan, remove the garden hose and shut the water off.
- 4
Put the top hose on the radiator and tighten the clamp. Fill the radiator with a 50 percent water/50 percent antifreeze mixture.
- 5
Start the Cavalier, but leave the radiator cap off. Allow the engine to come up to operating temperature so the thermostat opens and the radiator coolant level drops. Top off the radiator as needed, then reinstall the cap. Fill the plastic overflow reservoir to the full hot line.

How to Change the Engine Coolant in a Cavalier
The frequency with which you change the coolant in the radiator of a Cavalier depends on the type of coolant used. If you use standard antifreeze, you should change it every three years. If you use extended-life antifreeze, you should change it every five years. Dispose of used coolant properly so that it doesn't get into the groundwater and is not left out for animals to drink.
