How to Change a Faucet Valve on a Washer

The faucet valve supplies your washing machine with both hot and cold water for the wash cycle. On some washers, these are the same types of faucets used for outdoor connections, called "hose bibs." These valves are connected to your home's water supply, and allow you to cut the water to the washing machine without interrupting the supply to the rest of the house. You'll need to change the faucet valve on your washer if the old valve begins leaking or otherwise malfunctions.

Shut off the water supply for your house or apartment. The main supply valve is installed next to the water meter. In a house, this is usually buried in a utility or service box in the front or side yard. In an apartment or condo, this will be on the side of the building, or in a utility closet that stores your washer. Rotate the water supply valve with a pair of pliers to turn off the water.

Turn off the power to the washer. You can either unplug the washer or turn the power off at the main switch that controls the washer circuit.

    • 3

Move the washer away from the wall or any other objects behind it so you can access the faucet valve.

    • 4

Hold a towel underneath the faucet valve. Unscrew the coupling for the water supply hose, with the pliers. Use a towel to catch any water that spills out.

    • 5

Unscrew the faucet valve by gripping the hexagonal base with an adjustable wrench or pair of pliers. Rotate the valve counterclockwise.

    • 6

Clean off the supply pipe threads by rubbing them with a steel wool pad. Apply pipe thread compound to the threads. Insert the new faucet valve on the pipe. Turn it clockwise to tighten it. Secure it with the wrench.

    • 7

Wrap the threads on the faucet valve with Teflon plumber's tape. Attach the coupling and tighten it clockwise.

    • 8

Restore the water and power supply for the washer. Run a short test load. Watch the new faucet valve and make sure there are no leaks. Tighten any couplings, if needed.
