How to Choose Talavera Tiles

Ceramic tiles are an excellent choice for the kitchen or bathroom, because they are functional, colorful and practical. Talavera tiles have been made in Mexico since the 17th century, and Mexican manufacturers rely on the native red clay for their particular body and color. These tiles come in over 400 designs, so selection is sometimes overwhelming. Unless the look you want is Southwestern, use some restraint in your choice of color and design. A little bit of Talavera can go a long way toward making a space brighter.

  Select a color palette. Talavera is renowned for its vibrant hues taken from nature. Cobalt blue, red, green and bright yellow are the predominant colors. These deep and rich jewel tones can add warmth and visual excitement to any room.

  Pick a style. The most common designs are animals, classic Spanish patterns, solids, murals or tile sets in which 32 pieces, usually 24-by-24 inches total, come laid out in a pattern. You also can draw upon special designs and border and trim pieces. Designers usually use murals and tile sets as the centerpieces of a wall or floor, with matching or coordinating tile surrounding them.

  Select a size. Talavera tile ranges in size from 2-by-2 inches up to 6-by-6 inches.

  Mix the tiles from different boxes before you bond them in place. Because the tiles are handcrafted, you will find variations in color and consistency from one batch to another. Blend the tiles beforehand. Dry-fit the tiles in their designated space, since the size of the tile can vary by as much as 1/8 of an inch per tile.
