How to Color Hair Silver

Silver hair color isn't just for the over-50 set anymore. In addition to those seeking to even out their graying hair color, many younger people are looking to silver hair dye for a quirky, edgy look. Dying your hair silver is like dying your hair any other light color: You need to bleach your hair before you can apply silver dye. Silver hair dye is manufactured by many leading hair dye companies and can be found in drugstores and beauty supply chains.

Read the directions that come with your hair dye kit. Not all products are used exactly the same, and you will need to properly mix the ingredients to ensure best results.

    • 2

Put on your plastic gloves and protect your clothing from absorbing dye by placing a towel around your neck.

    • 3

Divide your hair up into four sections and secure them up on your head with claw clips.

    • 4

Mix the ingredients as directed in your dye's instruction manual in your mixing bowl.

    • 5

Apply the dye to your hair with the applicator section by section, starting at the ends of your hair and handling the roots last.

    • 6

Place a shower cap on your head.

    • 7

Set your timer for 40 minutes.

    • 8

Check your hair color in the mirror. If results are as desired, you are ready to rinse the dye out. Otherwise, set the timer for 5 minutes and check again. Do not leave dye in your hair longer than 50 minutes.

Rinse out the dye with warm water until the water runs clear.

Apply a generous amount of conditioner to your hair. Let it sit for at least 2 minutes.
