How to Connect Multiple Servers Via the Internet

Any individual or organization in possession of two or more servers may have the need to connect all of them via the Internet sooner or later. Since servers are essentially more powerful computers, they can be connected in the same way. In fact, you can actually follow the same steps to connect multiple servers as you would when connecting multiple PCs to the Internet.

Insert the end of a CAT6 ethernet cable to the Internet port of your router. The port that supports this cable resembles a larger-sized phone jack. Depending on the brand, the Internet port on your router will be labeled "LAN," "WAN" or simply "Internet."

Insert the opposite end of the CAT6 cable into one of the Internet ports on your switch. These ports are typically labeled "uplink."

    • 3

Connect your servers to the switch with the necessary number of CAT6 cables. For example, if you want to connect five servers, you would need five separate cables. The connection can be made by inserting one end of the cable into the "LAN" or "Internet" port on your servers, and the other into the individual Internet ports on your switch.

Configure your router. This is necessary to make sure all connected servers are able to access the Internet securely. You can learn how to properly configure your router by referring to the manual that accompanied the device.

Restart your servers. Once rebooted, each machine should have its own unique IP address and be able to access the Internet.
