How to Convert to Outlines in Acrobat

If you've ever received an Adobe Acrobat file where the designer hasn't converted the text to outlines and hasn't embedded the font in the file, then you know how unconverted text can become an issue. By converting text to mathematical outline, you ensure that the text renders the same way between users, and the PDF file may even be smaller than if you'd embedded the font files. You can convert the text to outlines directly from Adobe Acrobat, without needing to install the program that created the PDF file.
    • 1

Launch Adobe Acrobat and open the PDF file.

    • 2

Click the "Document" menu, then select "Watermark" and "Add."

    • 3

Type "watermark" (or any other text) into the watermark text field. Click and drag the "Opacity" slider down to "0%." Click "OK."

    • 4

Click the "Advanced" menu and choose "Print Production," then "Flattener Preview." Click to place a check in the "Convert All Text to Outlines" checkbox.

    • 5

Click "All pages in document" under the "Apply to PDF" heading. Click "Apply" to convert the text to mathematical outlines.

    • 6

Save the document to complete the text-to-outline conversion process.
