How to Cover Window Wells

Window wells solve the problem of musty, dark, unventilated basements and also allow egress in the event of a fire, but they may create drainage issues and may accumulate leaves, snow and even hapless rodents. Open window wells pose a hazard to small children, as well. Lightweight window well covers are available at home stores and are very economical, but they tend to blow away in the wind or break. A better option is to install a heavy-duty metal grate or fiberglass window well covering.

Buy a heavy-duty metal grate or fiberglass window well covering from a contractor or company specializing in window well coverings. Grates are easy to install, durable and allow air and light to come through, but they don't keep out leaves or rodents. Fiberglass coverings keep out leaves and rodents, but they restrict air and light.

Lay the window well covering over the well opening. It should fit securely or extend 1/4 inch over the edge, depending on the type.

Install latches and clips if the window well covering requires them and if the window isn't needed as a fire escape. Metal grates are often laid directly over the window well with no latches, so they can be removed easily in case of a fire.
