How to Create a Sequential Flow Chart

In a sequential flowchart, you're illustrating a process that happens in a chronological order. There is no deviation due to variables presented by decisions within the flowchart. In other words, the data that is in the process from the start of the flowchart to the end of the flowchart will go from step one, to step two, to step three and so on. It will not skip around. Flowcharts can be created with the use of pencil and paper, or various flowchart software that is available on the market.

  Write down on a piece of paper each step involved in your sequential process that you want to illustrate. For a simple calculation example, this could include prompting the user to enter a number, press a mathematical operator sign, input a second number, perform a calculation and then display the result.

  Draw an oval shape at the top of the page. Inside the oval, write "Start," without the quotes. Insert an arrow that points straight down from the bottom of the oval shape.

  Create a rectangle. Write inside the rectangle, "Type in the first number," without the quotes. Draw another downward arrow from the bottom of the rectangle.

  Create another rectangle and write inside it, "Prompt user to enter mathematical operator sign." Insert another downward arrow.

  Draw another rectangle. Inside it, write, "Get the second number." Repeat the downward arrow from the bottom of the shape.

  Insert a parallelogram shape. Inside it, write, "Perform calculation." Draw another downward line.

  Insert a final rectangle with the words "Display result" inside it. Draw one final downward arrow. Insert a final oval shape.

  Write "End" inside the final oval shape without the quotation marks.
